Shop Trac Multi-User
Shop Trac is available as both a single
user or a multi-user system. It
is very important that you do NOT attempt to run a
single user version of Shop Trac on more than a single
machine at a time! This will corrupt your data files!
This bulletin is provided
to help in the transition to a multi-user version of Shop
Trac, and does not deal with any network setup issues (see
the Network Setup Tech Tips).
This bulletin assumes at least 2 computers both accessing a
common network installation of Shop Trac.
 | Each computer MUST log
in with a unique user name. Users are defined using
the Setup | Multi-user option |
 | If 2 computers attempt
to access the same record, or sometimes the same file, one
will receive a "Lock Error" message. In some cases
it is possible to Retry the operation, in other cases the
operation cannot proceed and access is denied. |
 | During a Transaction,
ie) when an invoice is being posted, all the files in use
by the transaction are locked. The lock duration is
normally very short, but during this time other computers
cannot access these files. |
 | It is VERY IMPORTANT
that computers not be left unattended in the middle of an
operation that may have records and/or files locked.
Always return to the Shop Trac menu bar. |
 | There are normally NO
user prompts during a transaction. An exception to
this is the "Is this invoice correct?" prompt after an
invoice is printed. A computer left in this state
will deny access to almost all inventory and receivable
files. |
Updates that we provide
support both single user and multi-user systems. The
update will install the proper files without any user
intervention. See Network
Setup Tech Tips for information on file locations.
