Year 2000 Update

Shop Trac™ has always been (or at least we thought so) Year 2000 ready.  All file formats that involve dates already have enough space allotted for a 4 digit year.  Although the current date fields only show 2 digits the 1900 portion has always been assumed and inserted when a new record was created.  However, it has come to our attention that some routines were NOT doing this properly, and for this reason we have released a specific Year 2000 update. These instructions need only be followed once.  If an earlier Year 2000 update has already been installed do NOT repeat this procedure.

This update provides the following features and changes:

bullet

All date fields expanded to include a 4 digit year.  Any dates input will require a year value with 4 digits.

bullet

Transaction files renamed to include 4 digit year conventions.   This means that Shop Trac™ can now retain unlimited transaction file history.

bullet

A new option called 'Year 2000' has been added to the Utility menu.   This option must be used to verify that all existing data files have the dates formatted correctly.  Please see Year 2000 Conversion for details on using this option.

bullet

The Shop Trac™ name has been changed in the title bar to Shop Trac™ 2000.  We will use this naming convention simply as a marketing tool and all references to Shop ™ 2000 and/or to Shop Trac™ imply the one and same thing.

Year 2000 Conversion

Due to the nature of the Year 2000 conversion, we recommend that you make a backup of both program and data files before you install the update and do the conversion.

A 'Year 2000' option has been added to the Utility menu.  This option will require SUPERVISOR access.  This option will display a SED the lists all data files that need to be scanned for proper year 2000 date formats.  Each of these data files has a 'Checkmark' field next to it, and by default all these fields are checked.   These fields can be changed using a mouse or the <SPACE BAR>.  If a field is protected (you cannot move the cursor to it) this means that this data file has already passed the Year 2000 inspection.  You may process these files one at a time by selecting only a single file, and then selecting the 'Process' option on the 'Edit Menu', or you may process them all at one by selecting all files and then selecting 'Process' on the 'Edit Menu'.

During the process an asterisk (*) will be displayed beside the file being processed.  The lower area of the SED will display progress being made.

This entire process could take some time although this depends on the size of your data files.  A typical Shop Trac™ installation would take approximately 1 hour.

Other Year 2000 Issues

Much has been said (and very little done) about the Year 2000 issue and its effect on almost every aspect of our lives.  Opinions vary and it is very difficult to separate truth from fiction.
