Btrieve 6.x

Shop Trac uses the Btrieve Record Manager for all file access operations.   Btrieve is a product that we have licensed, and version 5.x ships with Shop Trac at no additional charge.  Version 6.x is also available, and offers many advantages over the 5.x version.  However, this is NOT a no-charge upgrade.  The cost to upgrade your current version of Btrieve to the new 6.x version is $149.00.   The reason for this is that we will need to purchase a license to be able to distribute the 6.x version to existing 5.x users.

System Requirements

The following are additional minimum system requirements for Btrieve 6.x:
bullet486CPU
bullet16M of RAM

Advantages

Btrieve 6.x offers a number of advantages over the previous 5.x version.  Many of these are rather technical, and user transparent.  Some of the more noticeable ones are:
bulletFile access is up to 40% faster.
bulletRuns in protected mode, leaving more memory for the application.
bulletImproved record locking for multi-user systems.
bulletAllows concurrent transactions for multi-user systems.
bulletAllows concurrent file/record locking for multi-user systems.
bulletMore efficient use of disk space.
bulletOperates in a Client/Server mode on some multi-user systems to reduce network traffic.

How to Obtain and Install It

Btrieve Version 6.x is available now.  To order Btrieve 6.x using traditional methods, see How to Contact Us.   It is also available from this Internet web site.  Before you can download it however, you will need to complete the Password Request Form, and request the download password for Btrieve 6.x.  Once you have this password, you can download the required file in the Download area.

Btrieve 6.x is provided with a 60 day free trial, but not all advantages will be realized until your data files are converted to the 6.x file format.  The upgrade includes software to convert your current version 5.x files to the required 6.x format, but it does NOT include anything to convert them back again!  For this reason we do NOT recommend converting existing files to the 6.x format until you are certain that you wish to use the 6.x version of Btrieve (we see no reason why you would not want to, except if your computer system does not meet the system requirements).  The 6.x version is designed to handle both the 5.x and 6.x data files, but some of the enhanced 6.x features will only work on version 6.x files.

The 60 day free trial is controlled by an internal counter.  In order to continue using it after this period you will need to purchase a runtime license at $149.00 (CDN).   Once this license has been arranged, an access key will be provided that will disable the counter.  See How to Contact Us to receive this access key via traditional methods, or complete the Feedback Form to request it via email.

Creating an Update Diskette From Internet Download

If you have received an "Btrieve 6.x Update Diskette" via traditional methods, you can continue to the next step.  Otherwise, these instructions are used to create a "Btrieve 6.x Update Diskette" from the file downloaded from the Internet.  They assume that the required update file BTR615.EXE has been downloaded to your hard drives C:\TEMP directory. This procedure will also require 1 formatted 1.4M floppy diskette.

bullet

Insert a formatted 1.4M floppy into drive A:

bullet

Execute the downloaded file BTR615.EXE with the parameter  A:

From a C:> DOS prompt the command would be

C:\TEMP\BTR615.EXE A:

bullet

Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 users can simply select the RUN command, either from the File or Start menu. At the run prompt type

C:\TEMP\BTR615 A:

Installing the Update Diskette

bullet

The command to install Btrieve 6.15 is the same as for all Shop Trac™ updates.  With the update diskette in drive A:, input the following command from a DOS prompt:

  INSTALL A:

bullet

The install procedure has the following prompts:

Destination Drive: Select the drive letter where the Shop Trac™ system is installed.  This defaults to C:
Shop Trac Program Directory:  Specify the Shop Trac™ program directory.  This defaults to \TRAC
Shop Trac Data Directory: Specify the Shop Trac™ data directory.   This defaults to DATA1.
Type of Install:  Choose "Software Installation"
Data File Format:  If you plan to convert your data files to 6.x format, select "Btrieve 6.x", otherwise select "Btrieve 5.x".   (We recommend that files are converted to 6.x format)

Configuring Workstations

bullet

Each workstation that will be running Shop Trac™ needs to be configured to use Btrieve 6.x.  This procedure needs to be completed at each applicable workstation.  With the update diskette in drive A:, input the following command at a DOS prompt:

  INSTALL A:

bullet

The install procedure has the following prompts:

Destination Drive: Select the drive letter where the Shop Trac™ system is installed.  Defaults to C:
Shop Trac Program Directory:  Use the Shop Trac™ program directory.  Defaults to \TRAC
Shop Trac Data Directory: Use the directory where data is stored.   Defaults to DATA1.
Type of Install:  Choose "Work Station Configuration".
Workstation Name:  Input a 'Unique' name for this workstation.   This name cannot be longer than 8 characters.  Please note that the name "Server"has already been used for our example files.

bullet

A batch file with the same name as the provided "Workstation Name" will be created in the \TRAC directory.  This file should be used to load Shop Trac™ and Btrieve 6.x on that station.  Windows 3.1 and/or Windows 95 users may also wish to create a Windows icon to access this batch file.  Sample files called ST31 and ST95 have been created in the \TRAC directory by the installation process.

bullet

You may also be prompted to allow changes to your CONFIG.SYS file.   If this file requires modification the install routine will make the required changes for you.

The install routine will also create sample Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 shortcut files.  These are called ST31 and ST95 and are located in the \TRAC directory.  These files assume a C:\TRAC installation using DATA1 for data.   These files load Shop Trac™ and Btrieve 6.x for a computer with a "Workstation name" of 'Server'.  Using these files as examples you can create shortcuts for all your workstations, using either the Windows 3.1 PIF editor, or the Windows 95 properties feature.

Converting 5.x Files to 6.x Format

All Btrieve 6.x files are located in a directory called BTRIEVE that is located in the \TRAC directory.  The installation procedure will have created a batch file used to convert all existing Btrieve files to the 6.x file format.  The following is the procedure required to use this batch file:

bullet

Make a COMPLETE BACKUP of all Shop Trac™ program and data files.

bullet

Make sure that the free space on your hard drive is at least 4 times as large as the largest Btrieve data file.  The Shop Trac™ Btrieve data files are located in the \TRAC\DATA\DATA1 directory if Shop Trac™ was installed using default options

bullet

If you have NOT already done so, install and configure Btrieve 6.x.  Indicate to the install procedure that you are using 6.x data files.    If Btrieve 6.x was previously installed for 5.x data file access, repeat the installation procedure and indicate that the data files will be in 6.x format.  If you are re-installing Btrieve 6.x, you will not need to re-configure the workstations.

bullet

From a DOS prompt of the drive where Shop Trac™ is installed, input the following commands:

  CD  \TRAC\BTRIEVE
  TEST

If these commands resulted in an error message, then the database engine cannot be loaded on your system.  This is usually caused by insufficient extended memory..  Make sure that your system meets the Minimum System Requirements.   If these commands were processed successfully, then continue with the next step.

bullet

From the DOS prompt, input the following command:

  CONVERT

This will start a conversion routine.  The entire conversion will take some time, so please be patient.  Progress being made will be displayed.  Any errors encountered will be written to the file BREBUILD.LOG also contained in the \TRAC\BTRIEVE directory.  When the conversion is complete use the command

  VIEWLOG

to examine this file.  If no major errors are listed here, you are ready to run Shop Trac™ using all the capabilities of Btrieve 6.x.

bullet

It is also a good idea to remove the Btrieve 5.x components from your system.  The installation includes a batch  file for this purpose.  This procedure will not delete these files, but will copy them to the \TRAC\BTRIEVE\BTRIEVE5 directory.  To run this batch file input the following from the \TRAC\BTRIEVE directory:

  BTRIEVE5
